Listen to our Hunt Harvest Health #6 Podcast- Food Friday: Backcountry Breakfast, Mountain Mush, and we should all avoid sugar.
Breakfast is an essential part of starting any day, but especially a backcountry hunting or travel trip. Ryan’s favorite food is an oatmeal concoction that he’s labeled Mountain Mush. It’s full of healthy carbs, fats, and protein, and has calories to fuel any long day of hiking.
Mountain Mush
1 serving (serving might be bigger or smaller depending on body size)
3/4 -1 cup oats- quick, old fashioned, rolled (don’t use steel cut)
1/2-1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder or protein powder of your choice. (Vanilla wins over chocolate here.)
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp peanut butter powder or 1 packet Justin’s almond butter packet
2 tbsp shredded coconut
as much diced dates, raisins, craisins, dried fruits that you prefer
1/4 cup sliced almonds
*optional sweeteners: agave, xylitol, coconut sugar(preferred)
Mix all ingredients together dry in a ziploc bag and seal.
To eat, add cold water to bag and eat. (Ryan’s preferred) If you prefer warm, put mix in bowl and add hot water. Can also be eaten throughout the day for sustained energy.
Enjoy with a nice cup of hot coffee or cold brew and a few drops of French Vanilla Stevia liquid.
